February is American Heart Month! This month, we would like to educate our readers on heart disease and how one can prevent it from happening. After all, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. We service a variety of industries, including restaurants and medical facilities. Therefore, we stress a great deal on health and wellness.

Thanks to the Center for Disease Control and Preventions Heart Disease, we were able to find some interesting facts on heart disease:

  • 1 in every 4 deaths every year is due to heart disease! About 610,000 individuals suffer from heart-related problems which end up costing them their lives.
  • Being able to distinguish warning signs and symptoms of a heart attack is extremely important for your health! In 2005, a survey asked all individuals who had previously suffered a heart attack and 92% noticed that they had chest pains prior to the attack. However, they said they did not act on it! Only 27% recognized all of their major symptoms and knew to call 9-1-1. Some of the warning signs of heart attacks are chest pain/discomfort, upper body pain, shortness of breath, or even nausea.
  • Americans that smoke, have high blood pressure, or have high cholesterol must be extra aware of heart disease warning signs. These are key risk factors which can increase your chances of developing heart disease. Other risk factors that can increase your risk of heart-related complications are suffering from diabetes, being overweight or obese, having a poor diet, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol use.

Make sure to recognize the warning signs of heart disease, keep yourself informed, and always stay healthy! Unfortunately, heart disease is sweeping the country at a drastic measure. Fortunately, we can put an end to this trend! Follow these hints to keep yourself and your loved ones free from heart-related complications.
